Murut Language Wing

 

Ms. Silipah Majius, a Murut Timugon is the Coordinator of the Timugon - Malay Bilingual Dictionary Project.

This project began in September 1991 under the auspices of Institut Linguistik SIL - Malaysia Branch and was handed over to KLF in July 1997. It is still going on and is expected to be completed soon.

Ms. Majius is also the Chairperson of the Murut Terminology Compilation Committee-which collects local terminologies to enrich the National language-a project by Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (DBP)-Sabah Branch.

 

Rungus Language Centre

 

Introducing Ms. Christine Dreiheller from Erlangen, Germany who is KLF's Technical Assistant in Linguistics since March 1999. Beginning with learning the Rungus language, she is currently in the care of her host family (Mr. Manjaman Gombiluk) in the village of Rondomon in Kudat.

Ms. Dreiheller aspires to promote development and research of the Rungus language. She has mastered fluency in the language and has completed an orthography sketch of the Rungus language. This task comprised of several tests and checks with native speakers, both in the rural areas as well as in urban areas of Rungus populace.


An Orthography Seminar was conducted in February 2001, where Ms. Dreiheller was able to present the orthography sketch above. In this seminar, Rungus speakers were called upon to discuss and build consensus on the spelling and writing system of their mother tongue.

More on Christine: Formerly an Occupational Therapist in Welzheim Germany, Christine pursued linguistic studies full-time at the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL)--Germany Branch. In 1989, in cooperation with the Philippine Ministry for Culture, Youth and Sports, Christine was invited to Ramos Island to take-up research of the Molbog language.
